A Tragic Night for Newlyweds

Families across Georgia are mourning the loss of Dave Fiji and his bride, Jesni. The newlyweds were among three people aboard a helicopter that crashed in Dawson County on their wedding night. The pilot, Nikhil Nargundkar, was also identified as one of the victims.

A Last-Minute Decision

The decision to take flight came after weather concerns initially prompted the couple’s ground departure. “We were trying to reach Dave,” said Phebah Fiji, his mother. “When the chopper came in, the pilot was very confident that it wouldn’t be an issue, even though it had started raining.” Despite her son’s reservations about low visibility, the family decided on a helicopter ride as part of their wedding package.

Confidence vs. Concerns

David’s mother, Phebah, explained, “With his confidence and since Dave doesn’t fly helicopters, you know, he went with his perspective of being able to make them, since it’s just a 20- to 25-minute flight data takeoff.” The family’s initial optimism turned into devastation as the night wore on. Jesni Fiji was also injured in the crash and remains hospitalized.

Federal Investigation

Emergency crews from the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office and local fire and EMS agencies responded to reports of a downed aircraft, securing the scene with crime scene tape and law enforcement vehicles. The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation, examining air traffic control communications, radar data, weather conditions, maintenance records, and the pilot’s background.

As federal investigators work to determine what caused the crash, the Fiji family plans to honor Dave’s memory through his funeral arrangements while supporting Jesni during her recovery. The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved in such decisions, especially on such joyous occasions.
