The Great Bond Rumor War
Idris Elba, the charismatic star of Luther, has once again silenced the James Bond rumor mill. As speculation swirls around who will don the iconic tuxedo and carry the golden gun in 2028, Elba is clear: he’s not in contention.
Since Daniel Craig’s final performance as 007 in No Time to Die, in October 2021, fans have been left guessing. Names like Regé-Jean Page and Tom Hardy were thrown into the mix, but Elba was one of the most persistent candidates.
Yet, at a recent premiere, he shot down any remaining hope.
“My name’s not getting thrown out, no way,” Elba told People magazine. “They’re going younger. And I wish them all the luck in the world.”
A Race Against Time and Prejudice
The casting of the next Bond actor has taken on a complex layer of racial scrutiny. In 2015, Anthony Horowitz, author of the official James Bond novels, noted that Elba might be too rough for the role. “For me, Idris Elba is a bit too rough to play the part,” he said in an interview with The Daily Mail.
Elba himself has been vocal about his reluctance to play the role due to its racial undertones. In 2011, he told NPR that he would “definitely consider” playing Bond but criticized the discussion around the role becoming centered on race. “I just don’t want to be the Black James Bond,” he said.
Elba has gone so far as to call the discussions about his casting “disgusting and off-putting.” He believes that making the issue a matter of race is not only problematic but also takes away from the story. “It became about nonsense and I got the brunt of it,” he said in an interview with SmartLess podcast.
A New Era for Bond
Amazon MGM Studios, now in charge of the franchise following Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli’s departure, has announced a search for Craig’s successor. The studio is looking for an “unknown” actor to lead the new era of James Bond films.
In September 2025, reports confirmed that director Denis Villeneuve was on board to helm the first film in this new Amazon era. Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight will write the script, and the new movie is not expected until 2028.
“While we don’t plan to disclose specific details during the casting process,” Amazon MGM stated, “we are excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right.”
The search for a new Bond actor will undoubtedly continue to be a hot topic in entertainment circles. Whether it’s a younger, unknown actor or someone else entirely, one thing is certain: the future of James Bond remains shrouded in mystery.
