The Traumatic Birth of Siena: Olivia Bowen’s Near-Death Experience
In an exclusive interview with The Sun, TV personality Olivia Bowen shared her harrowing experience during the birth of her daughter, Siena. The ordeal began when she and her husband Alex decided to have a home birth after a traumatic experience with their son Abel in 2022.
Home Birth Gone Wrong
The couple had planned for a more peaceful home delivery but faced unexpected challenges. After spending an excruciating 15 hours in labor, Olivia developed a severe bladder prolapse and was blue-lighted to the hospital. Alex described the scene: “It just ended up getting very painful. We had to be blue-lighted to hospital, we had to get into an ambulance which was really stressful.”
Emergency C-section and Life-Threatening Complications
Upon arrival at the hospital, Olivia insisted that something was wrong. Doctors discovered she had a severe bladder prolapse and needed immediate surgery. Despite her fear of hemorrhage, which nearly occurred with her first child Abel, she underwent an emergency c-section to deliver their daughter.
Near Death Experience
As they were preparing Siena for birth, the atmosphere in the room changed dramatically. Alex Bowen recalled: “The colour drain from Olivia’s face, it was the scariest thing I’ve ever had to witness.” Olivia suffered a massive hemorrhage and lost nearly three liters of blood. She required two emergency blood transfusions to stabilize her condition.
Postpartum Recovery and PTSD
The traumatic experience left both parents dealing with significant health issues and emotional scars. Olivia, who experienced post-traumatic stress disorder after the birth of Abel in 2022, struggled with health anxiety following this near-death event. “I remember getting home after that and having health anxiety and thinking that I wasn’t going to heal,” she said.
Olivia and Alex spent months recovering from their traumatic experiences. They highlighted the fragility of life: “Going through what we did with the twins and losing her twin, that already showed us the fragility of life and how important life is.” Despite the challenges, they are now focused on their reality show, Olivia and Alex: Parenthood.
The story of Olivia Bowen and her near-death experience during childbirth highlights the critical need for proper medical care and preparedness in home births. It serves as a reminder of the potential risks and the importance of having contingency plans in place.
