New Digital ID Offers Secure, Private Identity Verification for iPhone Users
Apple Inc. (AAPL) has introduced a new digital identity solution called Digital ID, allowing users to store and present their U.S. passport information securely in the Apple Wallet app on their iPhones or Apple Watches. This innovative feature aims to provide more convenient and secure ways for people to verify their identity, especially during domestic travel.
Secure and Private Identity Verification
Digital ID leverages the security and privacy features built into iPhone and Apple Watch to ensure that users’ personal data remains protected. According to Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, “With the launch of Digital ID, we’re excited to expand the ways users can store and present their identity — all with the security and privacy built into iPhone and Apple Watch.” The feature is designed to be a secure and convenient option for those who do not have REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses or state IDs.
Launch Details and Rollout
The new Digital ID will initially roll out in beta at TSA checkpoints at more than 250 airports across the United States, specifically for in-person identity verification during domestic travel. This marks a significant step forward in digital identity solutions, offering travelers an alternative to traditional physical documents while maintaining the security and privacy offered by Apple’s devices.
Bailey further explained that Digital ID is not intended as a replacement for a U.S. passport, emphasizing its limited use for domestic travel only: “Digital IDs brings this secure and convenient option to even more users across the country, as they can now add an ID to Wallet using information from their U.S. passport.” The company is committed to expanding the acceptance of Digital ID in various contexts, including businesses and online platforms.
Creating and Using Digital ID
To create a Digital ID, users start by tapping the Add (+) button in Apple Wallet on their iPhones, selecting Driver’s License or ID Cards, then choosing Digital ID. The process involves scanning the photo page of their physical U.S. passport, verifying its authenticity using the chip embedded on the back, taking a selfie for verification, and completing a series of facial and head movements as security steps.
When users need to present their Digital ID in person, they can double-click the side button or Home button to access Apple Wallet and select Digital ID. Holding their iPhone or Apple Watch near an identity reader allows them to review specific information being requested and authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID before any data is shared.
Digital ID takes advantage of encryption and privacy features already integrated into Apple devices, ensuring that users’ passport data is stored securely on the device itself. Apple cannot track when and where a user presents their ID or what data was shared, adding another layer of protection to this innovative identity solution.
