The Big Splash: A Bold Move Toward Gender Equality

You might think this is new, but… Nicky Chisholm has been making waves since she started The Big Swim in Brighton back in 2013. On Saturday 14 March 2026, her vision will come to a monumental scale with over 500 women braving the British coastlines.

From Idea to Movement

The event is hosted by two organizations: Land and Wave in Brighton and Sea Lanes Brighton. With tickets already selling like hotcakes, this event aims not just to break its own records but also to send a powerful message from shore to shore. It’s a celebration of International Women’s Day, raising awareness about sewage pollution, and celebrating women’s voices all at once.

Activism Wrapped in Glitter

Nicky herself explains that participants come for countless reasons: β€œBravery, grieving, mental health, celebration. Everyone has their own story.” Some are marking milestones; others are remembering loved ones. Many are stepping outside their comfort zones for the very first time. Rosie Tanner of Land & Wave says, “Land & Wave has long been campaigning to get more women working and playing in the outdoors, so we’re delighted to be welcoming a huge Dorset contingent to The Big Swim.”

Accessible and Inclusive

A significant step forward in accessibility is marked by 2026. Adaptive and wheelchair swimmers will take part, helping to shape long-term initiatives. With beach wheelchairs, disabled changing facilities, and a clear commitment to inclusion, The Big Swim is working to ensure the sea belongs to everyone.

The Symbolism of Giving

In a year when International Women’s Day carries the theme #GiveToGain, the symbolism couldn’t be clearer: give your courage, gain community; give your voice, gain momentum. Nicky already hints at special plans for 2027, but for now, the focus is firmly on 14 March.
