Mystery Man in Remote Reservoir: A Cold Case Heats Up

It’s been 18 months since a body was discovered in the depths of Claerwen Reservoir, a remote mid Wales water body that rarely sees visitors. The case has always been unusual—no belongings or distinctive features, no obvious means of transport. And now, with the help of advanced technology, police are hoping to finally break through.

New Facial Reconstruction: A Closer Look

Specialists at Liverpool John Moores University’s Face Lab have used a combination of photographs, dental records, and CT scans to digitally recreate the man’s face. The result is an image with “striking facial features,” including an overbite, which detectives hope will help identify him.

The Reservoir: An Unusual Discovery

Claerwen Reservoir, known as “clear light” in Welsh, was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1952. It’s a picturesque spot but one that sees few visitors, even during the summer months. The body of the man, wearing an expensive XXL wetsuit and nothing else, sparked extensive police searches and international appeals.

Local Skepticism: A Remote Location with Few Visitors

The area around the reservoir is sparsely populated, with no public transport service. Locals have long questioned how someone could reach the reservoir without any obvious means of transportation or why their belongings were not found on shore. Despite theories, there’s been no evidence to suggest a crime has been committed.

Police Hope: A New Lead in an Old Case

Detective Inspector Anthea Ponting from Dyfed-Powys Police hopes that the new facial reconstruction will finally provide a lead. She says it’s “more unusual than not” to be in this situation, but her team remains determined. “We believe this is our best chance to identify the male,” she adds. The image has already been shared with Interpol and the public is once again being asked for assistance.

“This is someone’s family member—someone’s loved one—and I would like nothing more than to return him to his loved ones who might be missing him,” Ponting concludes, echoing the emotional weight of this long-standing mystery.
