The U-Turn: A Rapid Shift in Matlock Town’s Management

In an unprecedented move, non-league club Matlock Town has reinstalled Adam Clayton as their manager following a dramatic 48-hour turnaround. The decision comes after Clayton had been dismissed just days prior to the Boxing Day defeat against Ossett United.

Clayton’s Dismissal and Reinstatement

The club was trying to navigate the best path for both them and Clayton, but the situation backfired. Following a 3-0 loss at Ossett United, it was confirmed that former Leeds midfielder Clayton had departed from his role alongside assistant Steve Eyre.

Club’s Perspective on the Decision

In a statement released by Matlock Town’s owner David Hilton, he explained, “We received an approach for Adam from a bigger club higher in the pyramid. We notified Adam of this but due to the investment and the potential to unsettle us, we decided not to allow those discussions to take place until our season was complete.” However, further reflection led the club to reconsider its stance.

Hilton continued, “We later felt that this was unfair on Adam and that the situation had the potential to impact us regardless. After his release and discussions with the other club and his family, Adam declined the offer of the new position and requested reinstatement at Matlock.” The club decided to bring back former manager Ryan Cresswell as both assistant manager and defensive coach.

Clayton’s Career Background

The 36-year-old Clayton has had a diverse career, playing for numerous clubs including Manchester City and Leeds United. He also made a single-season appearance in the Premier League with Middlesbrough before managing at various levels. Since taking over as manager of Matlock Town in March last year, he has shown promise despite the club’s recent struggles.

Current Status and Future Outlook

Matlock Town currently find themselves in third place in the Northern Premier League standings, seven points behind leaders Redcar Athletic with two games in hand. They face Silsde on New Year’s Day before hosting Newton Aycliffe next Tuesday night.

“Clayton has done a decent job since arriving at Matlock,” noted an insider. “While he couldn’t prevent relegation last season, the team is currently in contention for promotion this term.” Clayton’s return signals a fresh start and a renewed focus on stability and continuity within the club.
