The Cancellation of RIAT: A Blow to Local Businesses

Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) 2026 is off the books. The decision comes after months of deliberation, and while understandable, it’s a big loss for local firms.

Local hospitality businesses like the Mason Arms have felt the pinch. Tanya Callow-Trujillo, reservations manager at the pub, said, “It’s usually our busiest time of year.”

A Massive Impact on Hospitality

The cancellation of RIAT has had a substantial impact on local pubs and guesthouses. The Mason Arms alone has lost out on a significant number of bookings.

Leonie McIntosh, owner of Fairford Airshow Camping, said, “We were all absolutely devastated… if we can just keep some of the joy of everyone coming together on the campsite, then we’ll have achieved something.”

Adaptation and Resilience

Not all businesses are hit equally. Jacqui Bartels of The Bull Hotel in Fairford said that despite the cancellation, her business is doing well due to increased activity from US air force personnel.

Cotswold District Council understands why RIAT was cancelled but sees encouraging signs as local businesses adapt and plan for next year’s event if it goes ahead. “The summer won’t be the same,” said a representative from the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust Enterprises (RAFCT).

Looking Ahead

Retailers and service providers are bracing for what will happen in 2027, when RIAT is scheduled to return. For now, they’re focusing on keeping their businesses afloat.

The cancellation of RIAT is a stark reminder that while these events bring in tourism and revenue, they can also be disrupted by geopolitical issues beyond anyone’s control. But as always, local entrepreneurs will find a way to weather the storm and look forward to brighter days ahead.
