Emergency Preparedness in Cyprus: A Step Forward
Cyprus has long been grappling with the challenges of natural disasters, particularly wildfires and drone threats. The recent launch of CY-Alert marks a significant step forward in addressing these issues through advanced technology.
A Response to Tragedies
Just last July 2025, severe heatwaves combined with lack of an emergency alert system led to tragic consequences. Two people lost their lives near the village of Malia in Limassol district due to wildfires. The absence of a timely warning system left residents vulnerable and exposed.
The Technology Behind CY-Alert
CY-Alert, developed under EU-Alert technical standards, employs Cell Broadcast technology. This innovative method ensures that alerts are sent directly from mobile network antennas to all devices in the designated area, bypassing SMS limitations. It works regardless of network load or SIM card origin, ensuring that it reaches both residents and foreign visitors alike.
Testing and Implementation
The system will undergo a three-week testing phase starting June 2, 2026, during which residents can receive test alerts in Greek and English. A helpline at 1450 is available from May 27 for information and technical guidance. After the tests, CY-Alert will be integrated into the Next Generation 112 framework to enhance its interoperability.
Minister Ioannou emphasizes that with CY-Alert, “protecting human life, citizens’ property, and our natural wealth is the state’s highest priority.” This new system aims to provide immediate access to reliable information during critical moments, reinforcing public trust and preparedness.
Beyond Fire Seasons
While CY-Alert addresses urgent issues like wildfires and drone strikes, Cyprus also plans wider civil protection measures. Civil Defence is conducting community evacuation exercises across all districts for the first time island-wide. Additionally, €3.1 million has been allocated to clear abandoned agricultural land around communities as a fire prevention measure.
The launch of CY-Alert in June 2026 represents not just an upgrade in technology but also a commitment to improving public safety and resilience. As Cyprus takes this step forward, it hopes to set a precedent for other countries facing similar challenges.
