Police are responding to reports of an active shooter at Temple Israel, a synagogue and school in West Bloomfield, Michigan. The incident has drawn a swift response with dozens of emergency vehicles on site.
FBI Director Kash Patel stated there was “an apparent vehicle ramming” at the scene. According to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, shots were fired and a vehicle was involved. The suspect remains at large as police continue to search for him.
Local Governor’s Response
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer released a statement, expressing her concern over the incident: “This is heartbreaking. Michigan’s Jewish community should be able to live and practice their faith in peace. Antisemitism and violence have no place in Michigan.” She emphasized that state police are working with federal authorities to get more information.
Shelter-in-Place Orders and School Lockdowns
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Department has encouraged local residents to shelter in place, while nearby schools and daycare centers have been placed on lockdown. The sheriff also announced increased police presence at all Jewish facilities in the area.
Sheriff Bouchard stated that everyone has been moved out of the neighboring school and daycare. He added: “It’s a work in progress,” regarding the search for the suspect, and advised people to continue sheltering in place until their areas are cleared.
Developments and Further Updates
The incident at Temple Israel continues to develop. Michigan State Police have asked community members to stay away from the area as they increase patrols at other places of worship in the district. Local news outlet Fox 2 Detroit is broadcasting video footage showing smoke billowing out of the synagogue’s roof, with police cars and officers posted outside.
Teachers in Farmington Hills, a city adjacent to West Bloomfield where Temple Israel is located, are also on lockdown. The temple itself has more than 3,000 members, making it one of the largest congregations for reform Jews in the U.S., according to local reports.
