Season 3 Finale: The End of an Era for Tell Me Lies
Tell Me Lies is ending. Yes, you heard that right. After three seasons on Hulu, the dark psychological drama will come to a close with its upcoming finale. Showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer has made it clear that this decision was always in her plans.
“After three amazing seasons of Tell Me Lies, tonight’s episode will be the series finale,” Oppenheimer announced on Instagram. “This was always the ending my writing team and I had in mind.” Despite the show’s massive following, Oppenheimer felt it was time to bring the story to a natural close.
Ending with a Bang
The reason for the show’s conclusion is multifaceted. Oppenheimer explains that while she loves making the show and appreciates her audience, “I had so many conversations with our writers, and when you actually look at what could happen next, Lucy’s not in school anymore. Most of the cast are graduating college in the future.” The characters’ dispersal made it challenging to find a way forward that felt cohesive.
“There’s not a lot connecting them, so, while I think it’s such a privilege to know when a show is ending and be able to write an ending and quit while you’re ahead,” Oppenheimer added. “It’s hard.” She also mentioned the importance of maintaining the quality of the show, ensuring that any potential future seasons would not feel like a completely different entity.
The Characters Unveiled
Van Patten, who plays Lucy Albright, shared her thoughts on the finale. “It was bittersweet,” she said. “I think it’s so beautiful and rare that we got to do this for three seasons. We got really lucky that everybody loved the show and we were able to keep going.” She also noted the significance of having a clear beginning, middle, and end.
Oppenheimer delved into the complex relationship between Lucy and Stephen DeMarco (played by Jackson White). “Stephen’s never done a kindness or a well-intentioned thing in his life,” she stated. The showrunner emphasized that while Lucy’s actions often resulted from misinterpretations, Stephen was inherently cruel.
Future Plans
Despite the end of Tell Me Lies, Oppenheimer is not idle. She mentioned that she is developing a new project focused on dark, twisted relationships involving adult siblings and their interconnected lives. “I really want to do a family drama that feels as edgy and twisted and addictive as Tell Me Lies,” she said.
Oppenheimer’s vision for the future includes exploring more mature themes while maintaining her unique style. She hopes her work can resonate with audiences who have found value in the show’s exploration of emotional abuse and its consequences.
Final Thoughts
The final season of Tell Me Lies is set to premiere on Tuesday at 12AM ET (9 PM PT) on Hulu and Disney+. Fans are encouraged to tune in for a bittersweet conclusion. As Oppenheimer so poignantly put it, “We were able to have a beginning, middle and end.” And that’s exactly what the show delivered.
