. And from his point of view, it’s good to see him getting those minutes. He’s been playing well,” McKenna stated during the preparation for their upcoming match against Swansea City on Saturday afternoon at the Swansea.com Stadium.
The Impact and Future Prospects
Burgess’ departure came after he rejected a new contract from Ipswich, choosing to join Championship rivals Swansea City. The 30-year-old Australian defender played a crucial role in Ipswich’s promotion to the Premier League but found himself out of contract upon the club’s relegation and decided to seek regular first-team football.
“It’s obvious the things most players want, lots of playing time and to do as well financially as possible. He’s played good minutes here and he weighed up all his options and Swansea, I guess, was the offer that gave the best of those two in terms of playing minutes and I’m sure a good contract,” McKenna explained.
Despite feeling disappointed at losing Burgess, McKenna remains optimistic about Ipswich’s future.
The team is currently unbeaten and aims to break into the top-six positions. “Disappointed to lose him, he certainly has always been and would have been a strong addition to our group. But players are within their rights to make those decisions and as much as we’re disappointed to lose him, we all wished him well,” McKenna added.
Preparation for the Match
The upcoming match against Swansea City will be crucial for Ipswich Town’s unbeaten run. The team is looking forward to seeing Cameron Burgess on Saturday but also acknowledges the challenge posed by their opponents’ recent poor form, having won just one of their last six league fixtures.
“Good to see him doing well at club and international level. Hopefully we’ll disrupt that a little bit on Saturday,” McKenna said, indicating his team’s determination to make the most of this opportunity against Swansea City.
