It’s February 14, 2026, and you might think this is new, but the Chinese Year of the Horse means something big for you. Dr Xuan Wang, a senior lecturer in Chinese studies at Cardiff University, breaks down what it all means.

New Beginnings, Old Traditions

Chinese New Year, celebrated over 15 days by around two billion people, starts on February 17, 2027. It’s a time for new beginnings and optimism. Dr Wang explains: “It’s longing for something better, a feeling of optimism, hope and aspiration.” This year, the Fire Horse takes center stage in the zodiac calendar.

The Significance

The Year of the Fire Horse is seen as energetic and full of momentum. According to Dr Wang, it’s an open page for anyone to interpret, but most see horses as strong, powerful, and capable of galloping towards success. “It’s a year of action; you really want to drive up your energy, take initiatives and move.” However, caution is advised: “The horse tells people that in the midst of driving forward, they should go at a pace that doesn’t burn them out.”

Fire’s Influence

The fire element adds intensity and enthusiasm. Dr Wang says, “All elements are equally important, but I see the fire as being really strong.” It ignites people, fostering an unparalleled era of innovation. “I really do believe the upcoming year is going to be such a different year; it will bring so much more into my life.”

Celebrating Chinese New Year

Preparations begin days before the new year. Dr Wang recalls, “Big preparation takes place; cleaning the house, decorating, stocking up food, visiting family and people in the community.” The highlight is staying awake on the last day of the old year to welcome the new one. “We don’t go to bed because the idea is to wait for the old year to pass and the new year to arrive. We listen to music, watch performances, sit around a fire, crack sunflower seeds and share gossip.”

Modern Traditions

New traditions are emerging. Dr Wang mentions, “The Chinese zodiac calendar is having a moment with British influencers discussing it on TikTok.” She notes that the #yearofthesnake and #yearofthehorse have reached over 100,000 posts. One unique tradition is displaying Harry Potter’s Draco Malfoy, whose name in Chinese translates to “horse you fortune,” blending cultural elements.

The Rise of Chinese Astrology

Chinese astrology is becoming more prominent on the world stage. Dr Wang explains, “China is increasingly influential, so cultural practices are spreading.” The general public has more curiosity, and social media brings cultures closer together. “It’s a sweet way of trying to bring a very British thing into Chinese culture and create something really different.”

As you prepare for the new year, remember that while the Year of the Fire Horse is exciting, it’s also about balance and caution. Dr Wang concludes, “It feels very special.” Whether you’re planning business initiatives or personal goals, this year offers a fresh start.
