New Flight Frequencies to South African Cities

Qatar Airways (QR) has announced plans to boost its flight frequencies to three key South African cities: Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban. The expansion is set to take effect from February 2026 and is designed to meet the growing demand for both business and leisure travel.

Increased Flights to Major Destinations

The revised schedule will see Qatar Airways’ total weekly flights to South Africa increase from 35 to 42. The airline aims to strengthen its presence in this market by providing greater schedule flexibility and capacity for both corporate and leisure travelers.

Enhanced Connectivity via Doha Hamad International Airport

The expansion will leverage Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH) as the central hub, enabling seamless onward connections across Asia, the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East. The airline’s strategic partnerships with Air Algérie (AH), Kenya Airways (KQ), and RwandAir (WB) have already improved regional connectivity.

Investment in Southern Africa

The South African expansion follows a year of heightened activity for Qatar Airways across the African continent. In October 2024, the airline acquired a 25% stake in Airlink (4Z), further supporting feeder traffic into long-haul routes and improving access to secondary cities within the region.

Supporting Tourism and Trade

The frequency increases will play a crucial role in supporting tourism, trade, and international connectivity. According to BizCommunity, this move is expected to have a positive impact on both sectors by enhancing travel options between South Africa and major global regions, including China, Europe, and the United States.

Cargo Operations and Onboard Enhancements

Qatar Airways Cargo continues to play a significant role in African trade through its cargo operations. The airline provides belly-hold cargo capacity on passenger flights and operates dedicated freighter services across the continent. Qatar Airways Cargo currently transports more than 6,000 tonnes of cargo into and out of Africa each week, supporting key export sectors such as fresh produce, horticulture, and textiles.

On selected African routes, Qatar Airways has introduced enhanced onboard connectivity, including gate-to-gate Starlink Wi-Fi (subject to local regulatory approvals).

The airline has also updated its inflight experience with regionally inspired meals and an expanded selection of African music. These enhancements aim to provide a more personalized and enjoyable travel experience for passengers.

Decades-Long Commitment to Africa

Qatar Airways has operated services to Africa for over three decades, with its first African route launched in 1994. Today, the airline operates over 170 weekly flights to 29 cities across 21 African countries. These services are supported by interline and codeshare agreements with multiple African airline partners.

The expansion of Qatar Airways’ flight frequencies to South Africa is a testament to the airline’s commitment to strengthening its presence in key markets, enhancing regional connectivity, and supporting economic growth through travel and cargo operations.
