Paul Nicholls Considers Partnership with Former Jockey Sam Twiston-Davies

Horse racing’s leading trainer, Paul Nicholls, is exploring a potential partnership with former stable jockey Sam Twiston-Davies. In his recent blog on Betfair, Nicholls expressed interest in rekindling the relationship that was established between 2014 and 2018.

Twiston-Davies’ decision to go freelance after his four-year tenure with Nicholls has allowed him to ride for a training partnership run by his father and brother. However, Nicholls remains optimistic about the possibility of bringing Twiston-Davies back on board, especially for big-race events.

“I’ve been in a conversation with Sam Twiston-Davies,” said Nicholls. “It’s possible that he could ride some for us also, especially on those big days.” Nicholls highlighted the importance of maintaining a balance between experienced and young jockeys within his team.

Harry Cobden to Ride for JP McManus

Nicholls further revealed that Harry Cobden will be riding for JP McManus from May. This move, according to Nicholls, is part of a gentleman’s agreement and reflects the long-standing relationship between the trainer and his jockeys.

“When an offer comes along like this it’s too good to refuse,” stated Nicholls. “I’ve known about it for about a month and Harry and I have had several conversations, good conversations, and ultimately, I couldn’t stand in his way.” Nicholls expressed his best wishes to Cobden as he embarks on what is described as a fantastic job.

Future Plans and Considerations

Nicholls emphasized that Twiston-Davies will continue to be part of the team, albeit not as frequently. “He’ll still come and ride out for us, he’ll still ride for us when he can,” Nicholls said. The trainer plans to discuss the matter with the owners and hopes to make a decision in due time.

“We’re under no pressure to do anything quickly,” concluded Nicholls. “I love giving the youngsters opportunities, which I have done over the years, and I’ve got some good young jockeys in the team.” However, Nicholls acknowledged that there are times when he needs a Grade 1 jockey, such as during big-race events.

The potential partnership between Nicholls and Twiston-Davies highlights the dynamic nature of horse racing and the importance of maintaining strong relationships within the industry. As Nicholls prepares for the upcoming season, his approach to team management reflects both tradition and innovation in horse racing.
