The Verstappen Switch-up
You might think this is new, but…
Four-time Formula One world champion Max Verstappen has announced he will race a Mercedes… in this year’s Nürburgring 24hr race. Fresh from being whupped over the weekend by the Mercedes-AMG F1 team – alongside the rest of the grid, tbf – the Dutch F1 superstar will swap out of his V6 hybrid Red Bull and into a V8 Mercedes-AMG GT to run the famous, terrifying 24hr race in May.
Why Verstappen?
The Nürburgring is a special place,” he said about his new challenge. “There’s no other track like it. The Nürburgring 24hr is a race that’s been on my bucket list for a long time, so I’m really thrilled we can make it happen now.”
Verstappen has always had a soft spot for the Green Hell – last year he not-so-secretly tested a Ferrari 296 GT3 under the pseudonym ‘Franz Hermann’. This isn’t just about the challenge; Verstappen is a fan of the track. He’s been waiting for this opportunity.
A New Line-up
He’s got a strong line-up with Dani (Juncadella), Jules (Gounon), and Lucas (Auer). And great support from Red Bull and Mercedes-AMG Motorsport. Verstappen is confident in the team but knows it’ll be an uphill battle.
The Challenge Ahead
Verstappen’s switch to a Mercedes for this race isn’t just about proving himself; it’s also about understanding the different technology and engineering that goes into a high-performance car like the AMG GT. This will give him insights that could help his Red Bull team in future races.
N24’s pretty proper. Roll on May.
