Traffic Chaos on Major UK Motorway
The M6 motorway, one of the busiest in the United Kingdom, has been closed both ways between Junction 28 in Leyland and J27 in Wigan since last night. The closure was prompted by a “serious collision” that occurred around 10pm local time on October 26th, 2025.
Impact of the Closure
The M6 closure has caused significant disruption for commuters and travelers in northwest England. Despite early hopes that the motorway might reopen earlier this morning, National Highways North West confirmed that the closures and diversions would remain in place until further notice due to ongoing police investigation work.
Alternative Routes for Motorists
To navigate around the closed sections of the M6, two significant diversion routes have been implemented:
- Southbound Diversions:
- Northbound Diversions:
Leave the motorway at Junction 28 and follow local road signs to take the B5256 eastbound. At the next junction, turn right onto the A49 southbound. Continue on this route through several streets until reaching Dawson Lane.
From there, proceed northbound on Central Avenue before turning left into Euxton Lane. Head east towards Crow Orchard Road and turn right to reach J27 of the M6.
Exit the motorway at Junction 27 and follow local road signs to take the A5209 in Standish. At the junction with the A49, turn left and continue on this route until reaching the roundabout with the A581.
Take the second exit onto the A581 eastbound. Follow it towards the A49 before turning right at the traffic light controlled junction. Continue northbound on the A49 to the B5256, where you should turn left and follow this road back to Junction 28 of the M6.
