The Legacy of Steve Irwin: From Wildlife to the Ballroom
Ahead of Steve Irwin Day this weekend, son Robert paid tribute to his legendary father as he competed on “Dancing with the Stars,” aiming to emulate sister Bindi’s victory. The event is a poignant reminder of Steve’s enduring influence and the family’s commitment to wildlife conservation.
A Tribute Performance
In Tuesday’s episode of DWTS, Robert and his dance partner Witney Carson performed a foxtrot set to Leona Lewis’s “Footprints in the Sand.” The emotional performance concluded with a projected image of Steve Irwin cradling his children, leading Robert to crouch down in tears as the routine ended. On Instagram, Robert expressed gratitude for the experience: “Thank you @bindisueirwin for inspiring us with your freestyle to this song, and thank you @witneycarson for once again choreographing such a beautiful story through dance and for creating a space for me to convey raw emotions that I’ve never gotten to share before.”
Continuing the Family Legacy
Steve Irwin was not only known as the “Crocodile Hunter” but also as a wildlife conservationist who dedicated his life to protecting animals. He expressed that his children were “the proudest thing I’ve achieved personally” before his untimely death in 2006 at age 44. Robert, now 21, and Bindi, 27, have continued their father’s mission through the management of Australia Zoo, a wildlife park founded by their grandparents in 1970.
Together with mother Terri Irwin, they operate Wildlife Warriors, an organization established in 2002 to engage people in wildlife conservation efforts.
The trio also starred together for four years on the TV series “Crikey! It’s the Irwins,” showcasing their work at Australia Zoo and promoting awareness about endangered species.
Embracing Their Father’s Spirit
This weekend marks Steve Irwin Day, an annual celebration that highlights family, fun, and wildlife conservation. At Australia Zoo near Beerwah, Queensland, visitors can participate in various activities to honor Steve’s memory, including a 10% discount on tickets when wearing khaki clothing.
“Together we carry on Steve’s legacy,” Bindi and Robert have said, emphasizing their commitment to continuing their father’s mission. Their participation in DWTS is just one of many ways they keep his spirit alive while also pursuing their own passions in entertainment and conservation.
