The Man Behind the Numbers: Bruno Fernandes’ Journey at Old Trafford
Bruno Fernandes, the 31-year-old captain of Manchester United, is set for a landmark day on Saturday as he reaches his 300th appearance for the club against Brighton. The Portuguese midfielder has been instrumental since joining from Sporting in January 2020, contributing significantly to the team’s success.
Turning Down Al Hilal
In an interview with journalists ahead of this milestone game, Fernandes revealed that he spoke with both Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada about a potential move to Saudi Arabia. Al Hilal was reportedly willing to offer him £100 million for his services.
Advisory from Cristiano Ronaldo
Fernandes sought advice from Portugal teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, who plays in Saudi Arabia for Al Nassr. According to Fernandes, Ronaldo advised him based on his extensive experience. “I spoke with Cristiano about the situation, Saudi and everything,” he said. “I wasn’t eager to move to Saudi because I wanted to stay at the club – but Cristano told me his opinion on what I should do. It was important for me obviously with all the experience he has and everything – it was important for me to hear what he thought.”
Focus on Trophies
Fernandes remains committed to bringing major silverware to Old Trafford, despite the club’s recent struggles in the Premier League. “Every season I come back, I always have the belief that we can achieve something,” said Fernandes. “Everyone knows my aim is to win the Premier League and the Champions League.”
Competition with Kobbie Mainoo
Fernandes acknowledges the competition from young talent like Kobbie Mainoo, who has been kept out of the first team due to his ability. “I want to have the best competition to play in my position – for example, Kobbie Mainoo is competition because he is very capable of doing what I can do in a different way,” said Fernandes. “If you look at his numbers, Bruno is capable of scoring goals, Kobbie is more capable of taking on people. I like the competition and the fact of having Kobbie that is very young but capable of playing high-level football… it makes me improve, he makes me a better player.”
Manchester United’s ambition as a club is to win the Premier League by 2028, and Fernandes, with his two years left on contract, remains an integral part of that plan. His continued form and leadership will be crucial in achieving this goal.
