Fabio Borini’s Late Career Resurgence with Salford City
At 34 years old, former Liverpool forward Fabio Borini has found a new purpose in his career by joining League Two side Salford City. This move comes as part of the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) initiative aimed at providing out-of-contract players like Borini with opportunities to stay fit and be seen by clubs.
Having played for numerous top-tier teams including Chelsea, Roma, Liverpool, Sunderland, AC Milan, and Sampdoria, Borini’s decision to join Salford City is a testament to his passion for the game. The club has recently gained prominence after being bought by members of Manchester United’s Class of ’92, making it an exciting prospect for players looking to extend their careers.
The Buzz and Addiction of Professional Football
Borini attributes his continued drive in football to a combination of professional buzz, adrenaline, and what he calls “addiction.” He explains, “You can call it the buzz. You could call it adrenaline. You could even call it addiction.” Borini further elaborates that this addiction is common among professional athletes at the highest level, who seek to maintain those feelings despite knowing that eventually they will have to stop playing.
Despite his age and previous experiences, Borini remains committed to training early and putting in extra effort. “I was the first one into training when I was 21 and I am still the first one in now I am 34,” he states. This dedication is evident even during cold mornings as he patiently sits outside in his shorts, preparing for Salford City’s FA Cup match against Lincoln.
The PFA Initiative and Salford City’s Opportunities
The PFA has launched a series of pre-season camps for out-of-contract players like Borini. These camps provide essential training facilities and the chance to be seen by clubs. At Salford City, assistant manager Alex Bruce invited Borini to continue his training in a competitive environment.
This move was described as a “no-brainer” by Bruce.
Borini’s presence at Littleton Road has not only helped him stay fit but also provided a chance for the club to attract attention. His background and connection to famous Manchester United players like David Beckham, Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, and Paul Scholes have already drawn interest from opponents. “Now they have something more to look forward to, which is playing players like me.” Borini believes this added exposure will motivate both him and his teammates.
Aiming for the FA Cup and Beyond
Borini plans to continue playing football for two or three more years. He acknowledges that while replicating Liverpool’s run to the 2015 FA Cup semi-finals, where he was part of the squad beaten by Aston Villa in the last four, is unlikely, his goal remains realistic. Borini hopes to secure a place in the third round and potentially return to Anfield or the Stadium of Light.
“It would be nice to relive some experiences in those stadiums,” Borini says. “With the warmth of the club, that sticks with you forever.” His determination is clear, as he seeks not only personal satisfaction but also a chance to contribute meaningfully to Salford City’s future.
