The Rise of Michelle Agyemang: From Debut to Award-Winner
England forward Michelle Agyemang has been named BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year 2025, an accolade she received for her stellar performances on and off the pitch. The 19-year-old made a significant impact in her first full year as a senior international player, contributing crucial moments that helped the Lionesses secure their victory at Euro 2025.
Breakthrough Year
Agyemang’s journey to becoming the Young Sports Personality of the Year began with her debut for England. In April 2024, she made her senior international debut in a Nations League game against Belgium, scoring an impressive volley just 41 seconds after coming on as a substitute. This breakthrough moment set the stage for what was to come.
Key Moments at Euro 2025
During the Euros, Agyemang proved decisive off the bench, playing pivotal roles in crucial matches. She scored a pair of late equalisers that led England into extra-time and eventually to victory over Sweden and Italy. These interventions not only propelled her to be named young player of the tournament but also earned her the prestigious Golden Girl trophy for being the best young player in Europe.
Awards Night
Agyemang was honored with the award at a ceremony, where she expressed deep gratitude for all the support. “Wow. Thank you so much,” Agyemang said after receiving the award on Thursday. “To all my team-mates, coaches, I am so grateful. To my family, who have supported me all this year and throughout my career – even if it hasn’t been that long – I love you. ‘A big thank you to God for this opportunity,” she added, emphasizing her appreciation.
She was also nominated for the Kopa Trophy for the world’s best under-21 female player, recognizing her exceptional talent and potential in the sport.
Following her success with England, Agyemang has been on loan at Brighton from Arsenal since September 2024, further enhancing her experience and skill set.
However, her season came to a premature end after rupturing her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) while playing for the Lionesses in October. Despite this setback, Agyemang’s contributions during the Euro 2025 tournament solidified her place as one of the standout players of the year.
Judging Panel
The judging panel for Young Sports Personality of the Year included a diverse group of experts from various fields, including Maggie Alphonsi, Anita Asante, Libby Clegg, Carl Frampton, Ebony Rainford-Brent, and more.
