A Caring Community Initiative: Belize Mission Project
The Belize Mission Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to delivering essential dental care to underserved communities, recently returned to San Pedro Town on Ambergris Caye. This annual event marked the 30th year of the project’s commitment to improving oral health in Belize.
Community Impact and Services
This year’s mission was held from October 31st to November 7th, with dental clinics set up at the San Pedro Lions Den on Barrier Reef Drive. The clinics operated from 9 AM to 5 PM Monday through Thursday, extending until noon on Friday. During this week, the project provided services including fillings, extractions, and partial dentures.
Local professionals such as Dr. Jorge Mauricio Pleitez and former Miss San Pedro Faith Edgar joined the mission to support the dental clinics.
Expert Voices and Impact
Team member Steve Bender emphasized the positive impact of the project on local oral health. “We have noticed a significant improvement in the children’s teeth health,” Bender stated, highlighting that fluoride treatment plays a crucial role in strengthening tooth enamel and preventing decay. The fluoride clinics at the Holy Cross Anglican Primary School in San Mateo subdivision were particularly noteworthy, showing the project’s commitment to targeting vulnerable populations.
Continuing Legacy and Future Plans
The Belize Mission Project has been visiting San Pedro for over three decades, typically during October’s low tourism season. Their consistent presence ensures that many residents who might not otherwise have access to such services can receive the care they need. The project’s organizers are already preparing for its next visit in January 2026, aiming to continue their important work and build on the success of this year’s mission.
The Belize Mission Project serves as a shining example of how non-profit organizations can make significant contributions to community health.
By providing free dental services, they not only alleviate immediate pain and discomfort but also promote long-term oral health among island residents. As the project continues its 30-year legacy, it remains committed to improving the quality of life for those in need.
