Marvel’s Master Plan Unfolds: “Avengers: Doomsday” Teases in Cinemas
In a strategic move by Marvel Studios, the first trailer for the highly anticipated “Avengers: Doomsday.” is set to debut during screenings of “Avatar: Fire and Ash.” This exciting revelation comes as fans eagerly anticipate what this crossover film will bring to the table. The trailer is scheduled to be attached to the latest “Avatar” installment on December 19, 2025.
The Countdown Begins
If this plan holds true, December 19, 2025, will mark a significant milestone for Marvel fans. While the film is not set to hit theaters until December 18, 2026, theatergoers might get their first glimpse of Robert Downey Jr.’s titanium-masked supervillain early next year. This timing would be particularly fitting given that James Cameron’s third adventure to Pandora is releasing almost exactly one year before “Doomsday.”
Secretive Cast and Script
The casting process for “Doomsday” has been as secretive as ever. Alan Cumming, who will reprise his role as Nightcrawler, revealed that he began filming before even seeing the finished script. Similarly, David Harbour, Florence Pugh, and Kelsey Grammer confessed they had not read the completed script when starting their roles in the film. This approach is reminiscent of Anthony and Joe Russo’s previous Avengers movies, “Infinity War” and “Endgame.”
A Grand Crossover Event
“Doomsday” will unite multiple eras of Marvel under one multiversal roof, leading to a story that promises to be even more radical than the Avengers: Secret Wars. The film is set for release on December 18, 2026, and it’s expected to feature a host of returning stars including Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Vanessa Kirby in her first MCU role, and many other familiar faces. Simu Liu recently described the feeling of returning for such an affair to Collider’s Steve Weintraub, saying it reminded him of why he loved superhero movie-making.
“It’s pretty much what you think,” he said. “I don’t want to put words out that will be turned into their own soundbites, but I think it was just an incredibly exciting feeling to know that you were coming back and also to get to work with so many incredible people whose body of work I either grew up watching or greatly admire.” Getting to see them all in tights and spandex felt like a love letter to superhero movies in general.”
The film is set to be directed by Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, and the script will be written by Stephen McFeely, Michael Waldron, Jack Kirby, and Stan Lee. Other notable actors include Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn, and the $100 million man himself, Robert Downey Jr., as the big villain.
Preparation for the Multiverse
The stage is mostly set for “Doomsday,” with previous events such as “Thunderbolts” and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” premiering this year. Marvel’s recent chairs reveal for the cast of “Doomsday” contained many surprises, including the return of several 20th Century Fox X-Men characters.
With a massive global box office haul of $2.34 billion from “The Way of Water,” Disney is undoubtedly hoping that another round of visual spectacles will earn similar success with “Avatar: Fire and Ash.” The sequel returns to Pandora in the direct aftermath of 2022’s “The Way of Water,” as Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his family are pitted against the Ash People, a group of Na’vi determined to burn the lush planet to ash after feeling abandoned by Eywa. Even worse, Jake’s nemesis, Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), has allied with them, offering his firepower to their cause.
This new conflict threatens to engulf all of Pandora, and Jake and his people will need all the help they can get from nature and beyond to prevent a calamity. The sequel is set to premiere on December 19, 2025, just before Marvel fans get their first look at “Doomsday.”
