Vivienne Medrano Talks About Hazbin Hotel Season 2 Finale and Teases Season 3
In an interview with Polygon, Vivienne Medrano, the creator of Hazbin Hotel, delves into the season 2 finale and shares insights on upcoming developments in season 3. The animated musical series has captivated audiences with its complex characters and intricate plotlines.
Season 2’s Foreshadowing and Planning
Madrano explains that while some elements of season 2 were planned out from the pilot, a lot of changes have been made over the years. She notes that certain aspects of the pilot, like the face-off with the media and the question of proving whether Sinners can be redeemed, laid important groundwork for season 2.
“The narrative of the show, I’ve had in my head for a very long time,” Medrano states. “So I was able to put some of that into the pilot.” This approach allowed her to seamlessly transition into continuing the story without retelling the pilot.
Fight Scenes and Character Dynamics
Medrano discusses the battle scenes between Vox and Alastor, highlighting how they were approached differently in the season 2 finale compared to earlier fights. The initial fight was described as fun and dynamic, while the finale’s fight carries more emotional weight.
“The tone of that fight is obviously just to be fun, to be cool, and to get to see these characters in action,” Medrano explains. “But the finale fight has a lot more weight. It’s really about these two characters who have this really long history, and this really distinctive dynamic, really having it out.”
Character Development: Lute’s Story Arc
Lute’s character is highlighted as one of the series’ most complex and emotionally driven. Medrano explains that her story will likely see a significant payoff in either season 3 or season 4, though she cannot be definitive about which.
“The thing about Lute that I think is so interesting is, she’s unraveling,” says Medrano. “I think it’s really important that we set up her motivation and her anger and her reaction to the death of Adam in season 1.” This setup will lead to a culminating moment for Lute later in the series.
Anticipation for Season 3
Madrano expresses excitement about the emotional and romantic elements expected in season 3. “It’s the most romantic season, which I love as a romance writer,” she notes. Additionally, Medrano teases that there will be a significant villain reveal.
“I’m excited for people to see a character we’ve built up — I won’t say who, just to be extra-safe, but I think people will know by the end of this season who I’m talking about,” she adds. “A character who’s been built up as sort of a friendly face, or an anti-hero, a character who is on the right side for the first two seasons, getting to step into a villain role.”
Madrano also looks forward to delving deeper into the Morningstar family, describing them as some of her favorite characters in the series. “To pull season 3 a little bit more inward is something that I’m really looking forward to everyone seeing,” she concludes.
