Key Highlights
- Netflix has announced that three adult animation series will not return for a second season.
- The cancellations include Exploding Kittens, Twilight of the Gods, and Good Times.
- No specific reasons were given for the cancellations but context suggests they may be due to lack of viewership or other internal factors.
Exploding Kittens: A Cosmic Comedy Unveiled
First on the list is Exploding Kittens, a comedy series based on the card game of the same name. The show premiered in July 2024, creating a universe where God and the Devil find themselves living as cats, while an ordinary family gets caught up in their cosmic feud. Tom Ellis, Abraham Lim, Lucy Liu, Ally Maki, Mark Proksch, and Sasheer Zamata contributed to the voice cast for this 9-part series.
Some early development work did take place on a second season of Exploding Kittens, allowing the animation team to hit the ground running should they get a formal renewal.
However, it was ultimately not to be. While Netflix Games still hosts the mobile version of the classic card game and considers it one of its favorites in gaming lineup, this cancellation may reflect on the series’ overall viewership or other internal considerations.
Twilight of the Gods: Norse Mythology Meets Animation
Twilight of the Gods, a project by Zack Snyder, Jay Olivia, and Eric Carrasco with Stone Quarry Animation and Xilam Animation leading, was inspired by Norse mythology. The series follows a mortal king and a shield-maiden who are pulled into a brutal clash with gods whose power is slipping. Their quest sets off a chain of vengeance, prophecy, and cosmic upheaval that pushes the Nine Realms toward ruin.
While some early development work was carried out for a second season, Twilight of the Gods did not make it to fruition. Jay Oliva confirmed in an interview with us that they had hoped for a second season, but it seems these plans are on hold due to factors like Zack Snyder’s projects being put on ice and his recent work away from Netflix.
Good Times: A Rebooted Sitcom Misses the Mark
The third series up for cancellation is Good Times, a reboot of the well-known sitcom. Whether one believes it was deeply misunderstood or falls into unsavory stereotypes, it’s difficult to argue that bringing back this version was wise. The series featured a voice cast including J.B.
Smoove, Marsai Martin, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Jay Pharoah. While it managed to spend several days in the US top 10s as well as weekly top 10s across over 60 countries, garnering 5.4 million views since January 2024, this was not enough to warrant a second season.
Given that Netflix’s animated TV slate is packed with other shows in the pipeline, it’s clear that Good Times did not meet the necessary viewership or critical standards for a continuation. These cancellations highlight the competitive nature of content production and the careful selection process at streaming giants like Netflix.
The Future of Netflix’s Animation Slate
While these three series face cancellation, there are still several other adult animation projects in development that are set to premiere soon. Projects from Ricky Gervais, including Alley Cats, and the creator of Cartoon Network’s Apple & Onion, with Living The Dream, are among those on the horizon.
In addition, there are other shows like Strip Law, due out in February 2026; The One Piece; and Minecraft, all set to debut. Despite these new projects, it’s clear that Netflix is also facing the reality of a changing landscape where content must continually meet high standards for both viewership and financial success.
