A New Beast Emerges: Monster Hunter Wilds and Final Fantasy XIV

Welcome back to Save State where I return to Monster Hunter Wilds after a bit of an hiatus. As the game continues to evolve, each update brings new challenges for hunters like myself to tackle. The latest title update introduced Omega Planetes from the beloved Final Fantasy XIV universe, and it was time to catch up on all the event quests I missed.

The Seregios arena challenge quest is now a distant memory, replaced by a fiery octopus named Nu Udra.

Capcom has been consistently generous with the A rank times for these quests; I managed an A rank in just one try, and even achieved a time of 7 minutes on my second attempt. These challenges make the game exciting but also ensure that players stay engaged.

Omega Planetes: The Ultimate Hunt

The big allure of this update is undoubtedly the collaboration with Omega Planetes from Final Fantasy V (XIV). Originally a super boss in the fifth Final Fantasy game, Omega has since appeared in various titles due to its unique ability to interdimensional travel and conquer planets. In Monster Hunter Wilds, Omega aims to evolve by absorbing power from one of the biggest creatures in the Forbidden Lands.

However, your hunter steps in to prevent this evolution, making you a formidable foe.

This fight is both frantic and incredibly fun. Omega employs an arsenal of weaponry that can be quite chaotic for players. For instance, its rocket fists can be knocked out with a slinger or an overhead attack, while mini-Omegas can be easily dispatched or dodged.

Entering a frenzied mode called Pantokrator heightens the challenge as its attacks become relentless and unyielding.

Players have several options to handle Omega effectively. For example, using a slinger or well-timed overhead attacks can neutralize rocket fists, while mini-Omegas pose less of a threat if you’re prepared to deal with them quickly. Additionally, taking the tank role can be a boon in this fight, as players who use shield weapons will face significant chip damage from Omega’s attacks.

Savage Omega: A More Challenging Hunt

While the base quest against Omega is challenging enough, the Savage Omega hunt takes it to the next level. This “what-if” scenario explores how powerful Omega could have become if allowed to absorb power from Jin Dahaad, a giant heatsink dragon. The Savage Omega attack patterns are more frequent and varied, making this quest particularly difficult.

Players often find themselves struggling with new combinations of attacks, which can lead to trips back to the starting area on the kitty cat cart.

However, persistence pays off; my third attempt at clearing Savage Omega was successful. This experience has equipped me with a deeper understanding of handling Omega’s various attacks when using different weapons like the gunlance, sword and shield, heavy bowgun, or bow.

Support hunters play an essential role in this hunt. Alyssa and Fabius, as lance-users, can tank for you and take enmity if needed.

Kai’s hunting horn buffs and heals players, while Mina excels at popping wounds throughout the hunt. These support hunters are invaluable due to their ability to heal others with items like Lifepowder and Dust of Life, ensuring that even fainting doesn’t count against the three-faint limit for failing the quest.

Conclusion

Monster Hunter Wilds continues to evolve, offering new challenges and collaborations. The Omega Planetes hunt is both exhilarating and complex, with Savage Omega adding an extra layer of difficulty. As more updates are on the horizon, it’s clear that Capcom remains committed to keeping the game fresh and engaging for players.

Stay tuned as I look forward to title update 4 next month, which promises some much-needed performance improvements. For now, Monster Hunter Wilds is still going strong, and I’m eager to see what new challenges await in the future.
